Flight Review: JAL Business Class Sky Suite LHR –> HND

Japan Airlines‘ Sky Suite product has been out for some time and has really paved the way for luxury business class travel.

The Sky Suite, specially designed to create a private space for passengers while also providing unimpeded aisle access, was awarded Skytrax Best Business Class Airline Seat in 2013 but how does it fare now many years on?

Seat

Here are some of the key features of JAL’s Sky Suite:

  • Configuration: 2-3-2 configuration with aisle access from all seats
  • Design: fully lie flat bed, tray table and reading light
  • Entertainment: 23 inch monitor with various in-flight entertainment options (comes with touch-panel controller)
  • Power: Various in-seat power outlets available
  • Storage: Overhead storage, stowage under footrest and overhead shelf on certain seats.

On the whole, although slightly tired, the Sky Suite is a solid product — the seat is comfortable, spacious and private. The large LCD screen also makes watching in-flight moves more immersive.

Food and Drink

The food and drink on board JAL is what makes flying with this airline such a unique and exciting experience.

The dine on demand service has a choice of Western menu or Japanese menu, carefully catering for the needs of passengers.

The Western menu for dinner was superb — the fillet steak in particular was excellent and perfectly cooked. The dining really was top quality for a Business Class Meal.

For the second meal, the Japanese set of salmon, rice, soup and vegetables was simple, light and delicious. It is always fantastic to see JAL showcasing Japanese cuisine to passengers.

Amenities

JAL really do go above and beyond when it comes to amenities.

Inside the amenity kit you can find:

  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Face mask
  • Tissues
  • Eye mask
  • Ear plugs

JAL also provide slippers to wear onboard as well as a shoe horn.

To go with the in-flight entertainment, JAL standard headsets are provided.

Service

The service on board this flight was professional, polite and truly personalized to individual needs. The crew even offer cardigans in case passengers get too cold during the flight. The attention paid to detail was great and having good quality service really does elevate the whole flight experience.

Summary

Overall, although an older product, JAL Sky Suite is a top quality business class seat, elevated even more by its fantastic food and drink offering. Although not as glitzy and glamorous as some other airlines, JAL’s simple, elegant and luxurious cabin is sure to please the seasoned traveler.
