Flight Review: Asiana Airlines Business Class, ICN –> KIX

Posted by

If you’re flying to or in Asia, Asiana Airlines will often appear as one of many carriers available. We had rarely traveled on this airline given our loyalty to Oneworld members but on our last trip from Seoul to Osaka in Japan, we decided to see what Asiana Business Class was like — read on to find out our thoughts.

Seat

Here are some of the key features of the seats in Asiana Business Class:

  • Configuration: 2-2-2 configuration with a small pull-out partition between seats
  • Design: reclinable chair with ability to lie-flat, pull-out tray table from arm rest, reading light
  • Entertainment: screen with in-flight entertainment (with remote control)
  • Power: USB outlets near seat
  • Storage: Overhead storage and stowage near footrest

The first thing we noticed once we got onboard was how dated the cabin looked. The seats are quite clunky with old-fashioned seat controls, a metal footrest and retro-looking entertainment screens.

While the chairs were perfectly functional and somewhat comfortable, they did lack privacy given the 2-2-2 configuration and limited partitioning between seats.

Seat rating: 5/10

Food and Drink

As this was only a short 2-hour flight, we were served one meal onboard which was lunch. The menu had a choice of Western or Japanese main (note — both were non-vegetarian, so consider pre-ordering if you are vegan/vegetarian) and we chose the Western option of beef stew with spätzle.

The appetizer, main and dessert were all served on one tray and warm bread was also offered a bit later on during the meal service.

The beef stew was a little hit and miss — some pieces of meat were tender while others were quite tough and chewy. The spätzle, however, was flavorsome and tasty.

The appetizer and dessert were ok but nothing amazing. Coffee and tea were also served towards the end of the meal.

Food and drink rating: 6/10

Amenities

We were not expecting too much in the way of amenities on this short-haul flight, but were pleasantly surprised to find slippers already at our seats. A proper set of over-ear headphones was also provided for the in-flight entertainment which was great.

Amenities rating: 7/10

Service

The crew on board were professional with the in-flight manager coming to greet us soon after boarding and also thanking us before landing. On the whole, the service was pretty friendly and efficient but nothing to write home about.

Service rating: 7/10

Summary

Overall, we enjoyed getting a glimpse into what Asiana Airlines is truly like. While the cabin was quite dated, we did enjoy the service and some of the food. Would we fly with Asiana Airlines again? The fact it’s not a Oneworld member makes it difficult for us to say we’d actively seek it out but we certainly wouldn’t be against it.
